Our Story
Built by Tradespeople, for Homeowners Who Expect It Done Right
Privacy Shade was founded by Max Fainshtein, a tradesperson who kept seeing the same problem on job sites across Toronto and the GTA: homeowners investing in stone patios, custom pergolas, composite decks, and balcony upgrades, then realizing the space was still too exposed, too hot, or too hard to use in the conditions that matter most.
As the comfort-focused outdoor shade and privacy division of Canada Shutter Pros, Privacy Shade was created to give outdoor living projects their own dedicated focus: shade, bug control, glare reduction, wind management, and privacy. Max leads every site visit personally — measuring, advising on fabric and hardware options, and ensuring the installed system is matched to the real structure rather than a generic spec.
Some spaces need side protection from neighbours, wind, or low-angle sun. Others need dependable overhead shade without committing to a permanent roof. Many need both. The options most homeowners were finding were either too flimsy, too generic, or too disconnected from how the structure was actually built. What the market needed was a contractor who could recommend the right retractable system and install it cleanly.
We built Privacy Shade with an installer-first perspective. Before we quote any job, we do a site visit. Before we order anything, we measure the space ourselves. Privacy Shade is the dedicated outdoor comfort division of Canada Shutter Pros, focused on retractable privacy screens and awnings measured and installed as complete systems rather than sold as boxed products.
Exterior Retractable Privacy Screens
We supply and install exterior-grade roll-up privacy screens built for Canadian outdoor conditions. The fabric rolls into a compact housing tube at the top and deploys fully in seconds - giving you privacy on demand without permanent structure.
Retractable Awnings
We install retractable awnings when the priority is overhead shade above a patio, deck, balcony, terrace, or outdoor seating area. We help you choose the right cassette style, projection, and controls so the awning suits the structure and the way the space is used.
Manual & Motorized Options
We install manual and motorized systems based on the size of the opening, the frequency of use, and the level of convenience you want. Where motorization is the better fit, we use reliable Somfy controls and walk you through how the system works before the job is complete.
Site Visit, Quote & Installation
Our process is straightforward: we visit your site to measure precisely and show samples, provide a written quote, order the right custom system, and return to install it properly. There is no self-serve ordering or unassisted installation.

Exterior-Rated Components Throughout
Every component we use - fabric, housing, side channels, bottom bar, mounting brackets - is specified for exterior installation. Hardware is marine-grade powder-coated or anodized aluminium, rated for Ontario's freeze-thaw cycles, UV exposure, and high humidity. We do not substitute interior-grade parts to reduce costs.
Custom Fit - Every Single Order
There are no standard sizes in our catalogue. Every screen is manufactured to the precise measurements we take on-site. This means clean, flush edges, no awkward filler strips, and no exposed gaps where bugs, wind, or neighbours' sight lines can find their way in. A precise fit is also structurally important for the screen to operate smoothly for years.
Manual & Somfy-Motorized Systems
We are certified Somfy installers. For clients who want push-button or smart-home control, we install genuine Somfy tubular motors with full factory warranty support. For clients who want simplicity and lower cost, our manual crank systems are engineered to last decades. We never push a motorized system where a manual system is the better fit.
Six Fabric Types for Different Outdoor Needs
We carry six distinct fabric types, from open insect mesh and lighter solar-control fabrics to maximum-privacy, blackout, and clear enclosure materials. We bring fabric samples to every site visit so you can judge real privacy, light, airflow, and view tradeoffs before committing.
Clean Installation, Minimal Visual Clutter
We plan every installation to minimise exposed conduit, visible wiring, and surface-mounted junction boxes. For motorized systems, we route low-voltage wiring through structural cavities where possible. The result is an installation that looks like a deliberate architectural element, not an afterthought add-on.
Written Warranty & Post-Install Support
We provide a written warranty covering the fabric (5 years), hardware (5 years), Somfy motor (5 years via Somfy), and our installation workmanship (2 years). If anything we installed fails or shifts out of alignment, we return at no charge within the warranty period. We also offer annual maintenance service calls for long-term care.

From your first call to installation day, most projects are complete within four to five weeks. Here is exactly what to expect.
Site Visit & Measurement
We schedule a free on-site appointment at a time that suits you. During this visit, we measure every opening you want to cover, assess the mounting structure for suitability, and walk through your options - fabric openness, colour, manual vs. motorized. We bring a full fabric and hardware sample kit so you can make confident decisions on the spot. There is no charge for this visit and no obligation to proceed.
Custom Quote
Following the site visit, we provide a written, itemised quote that covers the exact screens specified, hardware, motorized components (if applicable), and installation labour. There are no hidden fees. The quote is valid for 30 days and comes with no pressure to decide immediately. If you have questions after reviewing the quote, we are available by phone or email to clarify.
Manufacturing & Order
Once you approve the quote and provide a deposit, we place your custom order. Each screen is manufactured to the precise dimensions we measured on-site. Typical lead time is three to four weeks from order confirmation. We contact you when your screens arrive to schedule the installation appointment. You will receive a reminder 48 hours before the installation day.
Professional Installation
Our installation team arrives at the scheduled time with all hardware and tools. We mount the screens cleanly and precisely, ensure smooth operation, and demonstrate how to use and maintain them. For motorized systems, we pair all remotes and verify app connectivity before we leave. We clean up completely and walk through the finished installation with you before considering the job complete. Any minor adjustments needed are handled on the spot.
