Frequently Asked Questions About Privacy Screens and Awnings

Get clear answers about product fit, installation, pricing, warranty, and how to choose between privacy screens and retractable awnings for your outdoor space.

General Questions

Start here if you are comparing privacy screens, awnings, or are not yet sure which product fits the space.

What is a retractable privacy screen?

A retractable privacy screen is an exterior screen system that drops down from a top housing to add side privacy, glare control, wind buffering, and low-angle sun protection. When you do not need it, the screen retracts back into the housing so the space feels open again.

When is a privacy screen the better choice than an awning?

Privacy screens are the better fit when the main problem comes from the side rather than above. That usually means neighbour sightlines, wind, glare, or late-day sun entering from the west or southwest. Awnings are stronger when the problem is overhead exposure above a patio, deck, balcony, or terrace.

Can one project need both a privacy screen and an awning?

Yes. Some outdoor spaces need overhead shade and side protection. A common example is a patio that gets strong midday sun from above, then low-angle sun or neighbour exposure from the side later in the day. In those layouts, an awning and a privacy screen can solve different parts of the problem.

What outdoor spaces can you work on?

We work on patios, decks, pergolas, porches, balconies, patio doors, windows, rooftop spaces, restaurant patios, hospitality spaces, and other outdoor seating areas across Toronto and the GTA. The right product depends on the mounting conditions and whether the problem is overhead shade, side protection, or both.

Do privacy screens help with heat and glare as well as privacy?

Yes. Solar screen fabrics reduce glare, cut a large share of UV exposure, and make west-facing or south-facing seating areas more comfortable. The exact effect depends on the fabric you choose, because different materials trade off privacy, airflow, outward visibility, and light filtering differently.

Product & Options

Questions about fabrics, awning series, motorized vs. manual operation, colours, and how each option performs.

How do I choose the right privacy screen fabric?

The right fabric depends on what matters most in the space. Some fabrics are better for insect control and airflow. Others are better for stronger daytime privacy, lower openness, or near-blackout performance. We bring samples to the quote visit and help compare privacy, view-through, airflow, and weather protection against the way the space is actually used.

What is the difference between manual and motorized privacy screens?

Manual screens are a good fit for many residential openings where the screen is easy to reach and daily use is simple. Motorized screens make more sense when the opening is larger, harder to access, or part of a multi-screen setup such as a pergola, deck, or porch with more than one panel. Motorized systems are also the better choice if you want one-touch convenience or future smart-home integration.

Should I choose an open-frame or a cassette retractable awning?

Open-frame awnings leave the arms and fabric roller exposed when retracted, which usually means broader coverage and a lower overall cost — a strong fit for larger backyard patios and decks. Cassette awnings enclose the fabric and arms in a housing when retracted, which gives a cleaner facade look and better long-term fabric protection — usually the right call for balconies, terraces, and design-led projects where the awning is visible year-round. We recommend the right fit after reviewing the space, sun exposure, and mounting conditions.

Should my awning be manual or motorized?

Manual crank operation is still a reasonable choice on smaller awnings used occasionally. Motorized operation is usually the better fit for daily use and for larger sizes — it supports wall switches, remotes, and optional sun or wind sensors, and it is the default for most cassette awnings because the housing is built around a motor tube.

Are your screens and awnings custom-sized?

Yes. We measure each project and order the final system to fit the actual opening, projection, or shade zone. That is important because small differences in framing, soffit depth, post spacing, or facade conditions can change the right product size and mounting approach.

What colours and finishes are available?

We offer a range of neutral fabric colours and hardware finishes so the system works with the home instead of standing out for the wrong reason. During the quote visit we can show finish options and explain which materials make the most sense for the product and application you are considering.

Installation

What to expect during measurement and installation, including timelines, preparation, and site conditions.

How long does installation usually take?

Most residential projects install quickly once the custom order is ready. A simpler one-product installation may take only a few hours, while a larger multi-screen or motorized project can take longer depending on wiring, grouping, and site conditions. We confirm the expected installation window before the work is scheduled.

What do I need to prepare before measurement or installation?

For the measurement visit, we mainly need access to the space and a clear view of the mounting conditions. For installation, it helps to clear nearby furniture or obstacles so the work area is open. If the project involves motorization, we also review the power plan in advance so there are no surprises on installation day.

What information helps you quote a project faster?

Photos of the space, rough measurements, and a short description of the problem are the most helpful starting points. Tell us whether the issue is overhead sun, side glare, wind, privacy, or some combination of those, and whether you are leaning toward manual or motorized operation.

Pricing & Warranty

Cost guidance, what's included in our warranty, and what ongoing maintenance and service looks like.

How much does a privacy screen cost?

Pricing depends on the width, drop, fabric, and whether the system is manual or motorized. A smaller single opening is priced very differently from a multi-panel pergola or large motorized deck setup. We provide written quotes after the site review so you can see the real product fit and cost clearly.

How much does a retractable awning cost?

Awning pricing depends on the series, width, projection, controls, and site conditions. A compact balcony awning and a broader patio awning are not priced the same way, and the right model depends on the space rather than on price alone. We quote the awning that actually fits the project instead of starting from a generic package price.

What warranty do you provide?

We stand behind the installed system with warranty coverage on the product and installation. The exact coverage depends on the product family and components involved, but the goal is straightforward: if something is wrong under normal use, you have a clear path back to us for support.

Do you offer service or maintenance after installation?

Yes. If a system needs adjustment, service, or replacement parts, we can help. We also explain basic care so the fabric, hardware, and motorized components stay in good shape over time.
